There were references to other websites, books, etc. You will find those here.

I made reference to this book in day one. The guy takes his son with him on a motorcycle ride across the USA. He calls the trip his "Chautauqua."  That's about all I remember from the book, except there was an interesting philosophy presented in a "non-preachy" way.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values

I think I mentioned this in day one or day two. It is an amazing story of the building of the Transcontinental Railroad connecting the East with the West Coast, allowing the crossing to be measured in days instead of weeks. It has value from a perspective of Politics, Business, and Society of the day.

Nothing Like It in the World: The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad, 1863-1869

Franklins logic and reasoning were pure pragmatism. This book does a good job of summarizing his life and makes you feel like you were standing in the room while the colonies were preparing for what England called "Franklin's war." He created a list of 13 virtues, the last of which I've altered:

Imitate Jesus, Socrates, and Franklin.

Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

That light at the end of the tunnel is Dagny Taggart's railroad. 40 years of rumors may be put to rest in 2008, when Angelina Joliet appears in the leading role. Ayn Rand's philosophy centered on the super-capitalist hero. An interesting perspective from a Russian born, naturalized Hollywood citizen in the 1940's. Alan Greenspan is a member of the Ayn Rand foundation.

Atlas Shrugged

Go ahead, take that trip to the Nepal, and get Lydia to hook you up. Check out her website and do what it takes to put yourself in the Southern Alps, or something equally cool on a Mongolian Peak or a Peruvian Glacier.

The League of Illinois Bicyclists has more information and key maps to make the trip and easy one. They also act as advocates for the advancement of bicycle projects in the State of Illinois.
